Mainframes & New Telecom Technology in Chicago

Mainframes are regarded to be very important in recent technology innovation for the industry. Mainframes allowed for massive infrastructure to be built quickly and effectively for the rapidly growing business markets. Up to today, many people wonder or fail to understand what mainframes look like or even how they work. In brief, mainframes are simply very large computers that are built into a frame. The core of mainframes is to run or process commercial applications for big businesses at massive scale. Thus, they are meant for processing big volumes of big data. On the contrary, mainframe computers are still being used and are considered a staple in crucial technology required for some businesses. Many organizations still use mainframes to do this day and regard them as an important piece of hardware to operate their large businesses in Chicago. (Deloitte Insights Report).

Mainframe computers are still being used in Chicago by some large organizations. Today`s mainframes contain new technologies that are aimed at improving how businesses are operating. For example, the recent IBM`s Z15 offers huge benefits for business operations (IBM). The companies that still use mainframe computers in Chicago include Allstate in the Chicago North Suburbs, PepsiCo Inc, and even R R Donnelley, amongst other companies (Oddells, 2). The users of mainframes are not keen to replace mainframes with newer technologies because they are more cost effective and more reliable.

Some major companies that operate in Chicago still see no benefits from leaving mainframes considering high security/data privacy options and other benefits. The major reason why some companies are still using mainframes is to be able to scale quickly and meet the rising challenge of always keeping up with the influx of rising volumes of data (Syncscot 7). “For organizations to stay in business, it’s important to provide the best value for money, to be flexible to business needs, and to ensure data integrity in terms of security particularly with viruses and ransomware attacks” (Eddolls 1). The above quotation shows that mainframes remain crucial for enhancing the achievement of organizational objectives. Mainframes still have the capacity to offer best business advantages that relate to information processing (sorting, merging, compressing as well as report generation).

Another reason that makes Chicago businesses want to keep using mainframes is that they are still accountable for the world`s technology production workloads at only 6% as compared to the total cost of using other informational technology. For example, IBM mainframes process about 87% of all credit card transactions over the world (IBM 3). Thus, mainframes remain a trending technology that can most likely remain dominating for the next decades.

Mainframes are still being used by some major companies in Chicago because they offer high security through hybrid multi-clouding. It is argued that mainframes particularly IBM`s latest Z15 truly does provide maximum security to credentials such that all data remained very secure through different multi-cloud environments (IBM 3). Therefore, companies are still holding true to staying only using mainframes to operate their security and big data because they do offer more data privacy over other options. Overall, it is argued companies still rely heavily on mainframes particularly IBM`s because of the following reasons; reliability, availability and serviceability, security, scalability, continuing capability (Eddolls 2). Additionally, mainframes are able to speed up and assist with very low processes of application development and this makes them remain relevant in many large industries.

New technologies are now being preferred over mainframes by large companies in Chicago. The emergency has seen many large businesses adopting Blockchain technology which is more promising than mainframes (Eddolls 1). As argued by Green, some companies are adopting the use of Blockchain technologies since it has the capacity to create more revenue faster. Chicago is regarded as one of the top 5 markets that demand Blockchain programming and related skills. Blockchain is quickly replacing mainframes. On the other hand, mainframe users are still in love with their long existing technology (IBM report 23). “There seems to be no mainframe explanation for the PC world in which we are living” (Clinton 3). It is more likely that mainframe developers are at risk of losing their business considering the multi-purposes of Blockchain technologies more recently.

In a nutshell, the need to remain competitive with emerging global competition influences big firms to adopt Blockchain technology over mainframes. IBM on the contrary is also considering marrying the two rivals; mainframes and Blockchain to achieve the best for big data. Blockchain appears to have attracted the attention of many Chicago based companies based on its many advantages.
